Dennis J. Toman, CELA, J.D.
Dennis
J. Toman, CELA, J.D., is the founder and owner of the Elderlaw Firm,
in Greensboro, North Carolina. He is a graduate of the University
of Wisconsin-Madison (B.B.A. Accounting 1981) and the University of
North Carolina Law School (J.D. 1984). Mr. Toman, licensed to practice
law in North Carolina, is an author and lecturer. He is a Certified
Elder Law Attorney, by the National Elder Law Foundation. In addition,
he is a Board Certified Specialist in Estate Planning and Fiduciary
Law by the North Carolina State Bar. Co-author of The North Carolina
Nursing Home Guide, Mr. Toman lectures frequently on Elder Law issues
as well as on the legal issues faced by families who have a loved
one with Alzheimer's. He is a member of the National Academy of Elder
Law Attorneys. He and his wife, Lynne, live in Greensboro and have
two children.
Steve Arrington, JD
Steven W. Arrington, J.D., is a graduate of University of North
Carolina-Central School of Law. He received his undergraduate degree
from Guilford College. He is licensed in North Carolina, and practices
in the areas of Elder Law, Guardianship, Estate Planning and Probate.
Steve has spoken at seminars, conferences and workshops on the needs
of the elderly, particularly in the area of Elder Law, specifically
Medicaid eligibility, and the importance of powers of attorney,
wills, trusts, joint property, living wills, and dealing with guardianship.
Ellen Jones
Ellen Jones, is a graduate of High Point College. She worked for
over 12 years with the Department of Social Services, including
many years handling Medicaid for nursing home cases. Ellen works
with families to gather the necessary information to let us do our
job. She also supervises our clients' Medicaid applications and
Redeterminations. Ellen is incredibly detail-oriented and has an
amazing ability to assist our clients with gathering information
they did not even realize existed. In addition Ellen assists with
legal research and drafts Medicaid briefs and memorandums. We are
told by some caseworkers that Ellen makes their jobs easier by preparing
some of the most comprehensive Medicaid applications they have ever
seen! Ellen has a gift for helping our clients through the maze
of Medicaid qualification during a time of great stress.
Carolyn Bowman
Carolyn Bowman, is the receptionist and a legal assistant for the
firm. Her official duties include answering the phones, client intake
and document preparation. In truth, Carolyn is involved in all areas
of our client service from the first time a client calls throughout
their continuing relationship with the firm. Of the many talents
Carolyn possesses, our clients most appreciate her understanding
demeanor during their time of crisis and dedication to meeting client
needs.
Don Smith
Don Smith is Director of Community Affairs for The Elderlaw Firm.
With many years of marketing experience for legal and financial
professionals, Don coordinates our community outreach programs including
professional and civic talks, special event participation, and marketing
activities. A true professional, Don has served as president of
many civic and church groups. He is always ready to talk with nursing
homes, assisted living facililties, senior groups, and others in
the aging network about ways that we tell more people about the
benefits of Elderlaw.
Laura Goodman
Laura Goodman is a paralegal with The Elder & Disability Law
Firm. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan.
Laura is our head paralegal for estate planning documents, probate
and trust administration. In addition to drafting our probate pleadings,
she is also responsible for performing legal research, drafting
estate planning documents and real estate deeds. Laura also deals
with insurance companies and financial institutions on a daily basis.
She can assist in cutting through the bureaucratic red tape to find
the answers to our clients' most pressing questions.
Peggy Smith
Peggy Smith is the Office Administrator for The Elderlaw Firm. She
has been the Executive Director for a national consulting organization,
and co-owner of a computer consulting company headquarted in Greensboro.
She has been a long-time resident of Greensboro and, with her husband,
Don Smith, provides a steadying hand to ensure the business success
of our firm. Peggy has personal experience with long-term care,
as her mother resided at an assisted living community in the Piedmont
Triad. Peggy's insight, empathy and common sense are invaluable
assets for our staff and clients.
